About Us
Most people do not understand us! We are retired! Or are we? We could travel…..we could play golf…..we could watch tv…..but, instead, we have chosen our lifestyle. Simply put, we both enjoy the farm and animals. We moved to Harrodsburg, Kentucky from the Florida Keys in 1979, with five children. We wanted a change of lifestyle and a change of pace so we bought a farm in Mercer County, 189 acres, and also bought 300 sheep. We were city people, so we had A LOT to learn. But, learn we did. In time, we added Nubian dairy goats, Scotch Highland cattle, Pygmy goats, a couple of llamas, a Jersey cow, two standard donkeys, and two miniature donkeys and in 1986, opened a bed and breakfast called Canaan Land. We loved it all, but times do change and as we got older and as Fred neared retirement, we decided to sell the bed and breakfast, disperse all the animals (only to wonderful homes) and move closer to town…..and thus, Full Moon Farm became our new home. Here we have a much smaller barn so the only animals we brought with us were our 2 miniature donkeys. Soon we heard about some miniatures not too far away and when we went “just to look”, we bought two bred jennets…and so it went….until now we have 18, which include 7 brood jennets, 2 yearlings, 2 jacks and 7 foals. Sometimes we think we are paranoid about our donkeys….many is the time that Theo has gone flying across the yard through a driving rain and lightening storm, just to make sure that no barn doors have blown shut, closing the donkeys outside (she used to do this with the dairy goats). The donkeys are never left outside in bad weather, in fact, they are pampered….they always have fresh water (heated in the winter), hay to meet their needs, mineral salt, and sweet smelling straw for bedding. Theo and Fred have a theory….if you don’t take the very best care of your animals, you should be in another business! We never cease to find joy and amazement as we watch our little herd grazing in the fields. Stand there for a few minutes, perhaps give a whistle or two, and suddenly they are all at the fence, their sweet faces pressed close. What a great way to begin or end a day! Email us at tbee@adelphia.net or call us on our land line at 859-734-4533, or on Fred’s cell #, 859-265-1410. We’d love to talk to you and will try to answer any questions you might have. We like to have visitors, so plan a trip to Full Moon Farm…..call first to make sure it suits.
