Full Moon Farm is located in central Kentucky, in the heart of the “blue grass” state, approximately 25 miles south of Lexington. We are a small farm with a small herd of registered miniature donkeys.
We have been raising miniatures for 9 years, however, for a few years we just had our original jack and jennet, selling the foal they produced each year. People have funny stories about how they got started in miniatures and we have one too. In 1999, we had a herd of Scotch Highland cows. A buyer wanted a white one and he also wanted to work a 3 party trade, so, sight unseen, we agreed to take a miniature jennet and jack. We already owned two standard jennets that were guard animals for our sheep so we knew about donkeys, but when that little pair stepped out of the trailer, we were smitten! We have gradually added more and today we have 18. Our donkeys are handled often, sometimes many times a day, as our 4 young grandsons, who live next door, (see their picture under Farm Photos) come every day to brush, walk, and give them treats.
Our goal is to raise miniature donkeys that are small, strong and healthy. We also want conformation and gentle and pleasing dispositions. We are particular about their health and keep accurate records on every donkey. Our program includes yearly vaccinations, 3 pneumoabort-k shots to our pregnant jennets, routine worming every 2 months and farrier visits every 3 months or more often if necessary. Our foals come in a variety of colors and we think any of them could go in the show ring, however, our first concern is that they go to loving homes when they are sold. Whether we see them in the show ring or sell them as pets or good breeding stock, we want someone to take good care of them. We never sell a single donkey unless they will have a good companion and if possible, we like to sell pairs because most of ours have special friendships formed here on Full Moon Farm.
